Anyone who has “followed” me and my antics over the last four years will know that I set up and ran a website known as wethepeople.ie. I gathered a few heads that I met on my travels who loosely agreed that the government was out of control and that we should in fact do something about it. And so we formed a group. We also set up a telegram group of the same name which is still running. Click here to join. The groups primary aim was to bridge the gap between activists and the media by publishing articles from an alternative, self funded grassroots perspective. We also made one off videos, monologues, some poetry etc along the way. We ran a podcast series called Caint Saor, which cut the teeth of some of our members who have gone on to host other successful podcasts. Some of our writers have set up successful Substacks and are already operating popular websites of their own that are pumping out great content. We also provided support and awareness to protest groups and activists around Ireland by gathering their content on our telegram and keeping people posted about events, gatherings and demos. I feel that wethepeople was a fierce success for what it was, in the environment it was in.
The success of the group relied on diversity of thought and the critique of proposed incentives. Each one of us on our own merits but also missing one trait or another that other members of the group offered up generously, whether that be experience, perspective, literacy assistance ( I am a disaster with grammar) and more. We gave each other 110%. We were in the mix with the full spectrum of the movement, from the man on the street to the media, from the hippies to the squares, helping the causes we saw as important. Members came and went but overall it was a serious project that proved to me that a handful of awake people with initiative can cause the powers that be to stay awake at night. The results of our efforts are still echoing through the halls of the MSM, NGO’s and the Oireachtas as we speak.
A great deal of our success relied on those who followed our exploits and shared our content, showed up at rallies and created the stories that we used to deal critical blows to the establishment. We extend our gratitude to you all.
So where is the website?
Due to a natural parting of ways some our group has committed to the path of politics, others to focussing on their personal lives. Others like myself are committing to writing more. Due to this change we will no longer be running a website. Our Twitter has changed its name to ‘An Gáe Bulg’, The name of Cúchulainn’s spear. A few of us are looking to promote articles within the movement and so we have launched a writers guild of sorts. Nothing too formal but it is a way for us to get emerging writers noticed. If you are interested in communicating with other writers and getting your articles shared to a wider audience you can reach out to me here or through our Twitter. Watch this space as new initiatives will pop up in the not so distant future.
I would like to thank everyone who was involved in any way with wethepeople over the last two years. Muidne na daoine go deo!
