Twitter/X: Censorship Function Creep
Elon Musk's Promised Land Of Free Speech Regresses Into 'Misery' Style Open Prison.
Those of you who remember the WeThePeopleEire twitter page will remember we grew the page from scratch, joining the platform when Elon Musk bought it under the promise of free speech. At the turn of the year, the political landscape exploded with new twitter accounts and older established accounts now free to engage with Ireland’s political and media class unhindered. Vexatious reporting was wholesale ignored by Musks Twitter, allowing for harsh criticism to be levied against the precious liberals and the wokies without big brother to save them. Within weeks we had almost completely captured the National conversation through hashtag campaigns, logical rebuttals of outlandish tweets and scrutiny of the talking heads who had gone soft from lack of quarrel.
This golden era of Twitter allowed the “far-right” to capture and create narratives at will. The freedom of expression and organic reach proving that if given the chance to peruse the writings and utterances of anti establishment thought, Joe Public is on our side 9 times out of ten. The concept of a person being ‘ratioed’ became par for the course as personalities that had been lulled into the false security of a censored platform, now had comment sections filled with reems of bias busting objectivity and satire. The calls for draconian measures fell on deaf ears as the “Free Speech Absolutist” unbanned key players in the Free Speech Movement. The wailing legion of millennials and Gen Z’ers migrated over to Mastadon in a credulous demonstration of schoolyard groupthink that left the rest of twitter in the fits of laughter. “I'll be over on Mastadon if anyone needs me” exetera, exetera, exetera.
*In case you didn’t know, the wokies consumed themselves on Mastodon within weeks, creating exclusive servers with pedantic rules on speech and silently returned to Twitter.
After this point, increased character counts were introduced for Twitter Blue subscribers, meaning that Musk was allowing long-form content. You might already know that I was running a website called wethepeople.ie for just over a year at this point, publishing articles and podcasts etc. This new Twitter feature allowed us to paste our articles directly into Twitter, rather than share the link to our site ( we shared the link in a comment below the post ). We learned that Musk was throttling posts that were diverting traffic away from his platform so we chose to post Articles directly and boy did this pay off. Our long-form articles exploded with views and reshares, at times leading to mass pressure campaigns against opposing activists, politicians and a whole host of other hostile entities. We routinely beat the mainstream for views on our articles. Aside from regular smart-alec posts from yours truly, our long-form articles regularity garnered between 20k and 100k views. Brilliant writers such as Stephen Sutton and Luke O’Connor, among a host of others got to post their social commentary, journalistic discoveries and even some poetry to a large audience. Unfortunately this stream of viewership seems to have been targeted by Twitter/X under the new C.E.O, Linda Yaccarino and her obsession with controlling speech.
Strangely, I was writing this article while watching a film tonight, an adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery. The antagonist of the film is control freak called Anne Wilkes who locks an injured author in her home during a snow in. She forces him to burn his own book that he was writing, the last in a series that Wilkes is obsessed with, because she did not agree with his conclusion to the main characters story arc and forces him to re-write the entire book in line with her preferences. Wilkes would allow the author, Paul, to write large swathes and then read the chapters, flying into bi-polar fits of rage and euphoria respectively. Paul is coerced to edit and rewrite the chapters without any idea of what is kosher. Paul never knew where he stood and the illusion of freedom, that Wilkes was just keeping him there for his own good, was the most terrifying aspect of Pauls captivity leading to him feigning Stockholm Syndrome. The Parallels between Annie Wilkes and Linda Yaccarino’s policing of Twitter are frightening. Just as Wilkes makes herself editor in chief of Pauls book, Yaccarino’s Twitter becomes the editor of all of our tweets. If Twitter insists on screening, ranking and removing tweets then they become a publisher de facto and should shoulder any and all liability for tweets. Otherwise, we should be able to tweet freely.
Since Yaccarino assumed her role Twitter has been absolutely septic. The reach of nationalist accounts has now become almost non existent. The WeThePeopleEire account, renamed to ‘An Gáe Bulg’, which was hitting 5 digit views with every post, was suddenly maxing out at 100-200 views. Stephen Suttons article Why did Conor Gallagher report that Aisling Murphy was strangled? barely reached 3000 views using the Twitter method despite there being a large amount of reposts and likes comparable to posts that had 20k+ views. All subsequent articles that were posted inline in a Twitter post and painstakingly edited inside the Twitter post field, failed to breach the 200 mark. This final throttling, keeping us completely out of the Zeitgeist was for me, the final straw. It is clear to me that when we brought the news of The Irish Times publishing false causes of death to the Irish public that the media complex have broached the topic with Twitter in order to silence us. It also appears they may have facilitated such a request.
I have always been a strong willed person, never allowing another person or entity to make a fool out of me or put me down where possible. I personally will not play Twitters game of Schrödinger's Terms and Conditions, where you don’t know whether your account is alive or dead. You are never told when you have breached a rule and I firmly belief that if you were told in an official since it would become a tangible point of contention and by extension, an admission of hypocrisy from Musk and Yaccarino. There is zero recourse for shadow bans or throttling because the justification is never provided. Considering the claim made by Yaccarino in her memo to all Twitter staff, that Twitter wants to be the town square and champion free speech, I can only arrive at the conclusion that this is a wholesale lie.
Here’s the full memo Yaccarino sent to employees, I have highlighted the clear contradictions in this memo compared to actual end results:
“Hello Twitter!
People keep asking me: Why Twitter? So, I’ll tell you.
From space exploration to electric vehicles, Elon knew these industries needed transformation, so he did it. More recently it has become increasingly clear that the global town square needs transformation — to drive civilization forward through the unfiltered exchange of information and open dialogue about the things that matter most to us.
Have you ever been talking with someone particularly insightful and thought, You’re brilliant — everybody should get the chance to hear this. Or, I’m learning so much from you — can we do this again? Or maybe it’s as simple as, You should have the freedom to speak your mind. We all should.
Enter Twitter 2.0.
Twitter is on a mission to become the world’s most accurate real-time information source and a global town square for communication. We’re on the precipice of making history — and that’s not an empty promise. That’s OUR reality.
When you start by wrapping your arms around this powerful vision, literally everything is possible. You have to genuinely believe — and work hard for that belief. And in this moment of complete reinvention, we have the opportunity to reach across aisles, create new partnerships, celebrate new voices, and build something together that can change the world. And from what I can tell so far, you’re built for this.
The success of Twitter 2.0 is all of our responsibility.
We need to think big.
We need to transform.
We need to do it all together.
And we can do it all by starting from first principles — questioning our assumptions and building something new from the ground up. It’s rare to have the chance to put a new future into the hands of every person, partner, and creator on the planet.
That’s exactly why I’m here — with all of YOU.
So, let’s dig our heels in (4 inches or flat!) and build Twitter 2.0 together.
Linda”
This memo does not match up with the blog she wrote on twitters website where she says Twitter is about Freedom of speech, not freedom of reach. Meaning that the town square concept is actually more like assigned seating at a cinema and everyone has to stay quiet while the advertiser friendly accounts talk about the latest war they want to sell you. This to me shows that Yaccarino, as her W.E.F credentials already shows, is a sociopathic, tyrannical lier. This freedom of reach bullshit is exactly what is happening to accounts like ours. Yaccarino showed example notices in her blog that convey that Twitter will tell you when your content is limited, allowing you to then challenge that limitation. In our case this notice was not appearing on our tweets, giving us no means of recourse. We just have to accept that an account with premium membership, 4,500 followers and gaggle of writers posting articles that we can only hit 200 views. Meanwhile, state sponsored activists with regular burner accounts of under 300 followers are getting thousands of views on low quality tesco value tweets. It is apparent now more than ever that Twitter has full devolved into its original form. An echo chamber of policy pushers and manufactured opinion.
Twitter is up to all sorts of skullduggery now that Yaccarino is in charge and Musk is toeing the Globalist line of online censorship. The creation of Coimisiún na Meán under TD Catherine Martin’s WEF driven global conquest of freedom, will become Irelands Ministry Of Truth, demanding that Twitter facilitates the most Orwellian, pedantic interventions in the Irish free exchange market of ideas. The writing is on the wall with the implementation of such measures already being facilitated at Twitter. In regards to our constitution, these people have been explicitly trained like sniffer hounds to only find freedom, and bark like hell on the promise of a biscuit and an “attaboy”. I for one, refuse to smuggle truth and free conscience past these mongrels. I will carry it openly and proudly. If Twitter is not the place then so be it.

Hardly ever used it, but on foot of your article I just deactivated my Twitter account. It will apparently be deleted entirely on Dec 1st :-)
Great article Stephen, yes time to move on it’s served it’s purpose, maybe GAB?
